Laser Scanning - Heritage
Laser scanning enables you to record specific areas in which enhanced measurements can be taken for example mosaic plaster work on ceilings and walls, this is extremely important for surveying listed buildings. An example is the statue of Charles Stewart Parnell “The uncrowned King of Ireland” located at the north end of O’ Connell Street Dublin.
The first example included here is Slane Castle on the river Boyne, made famous by a historic battle in 1690. The castle is also well known for its annual concerts which have in recent times included Madonna, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and U2. In this case a GPS survey was combined with the Laser Scan.
The second example is a Survey of Pearse Street railway Station, Dublin. The choice of Laser Scanner as preferred method of survey was dictated by two key considerations; the intricate structure of the Victorian roof was not possible to survey by any other method. This roof was and remains a notable engineering feat and an important consideration in the redevelopment and restoration of the station.
The second reason for using a laser scanner to complete the project was that Pearse Street Railway Station is one of the busiest railway stations in Ireland. In addition to the large number of commuters the station could not be closed for any length of time, the laser scanner allowed completion of the survey of the track, platforms and roof while allowing the trains to continue to operate without delay.
