Laser Scanning - Archaeology

Laser Scanning is the most complete method of recording archaeological finds as it is the only method of recording both the visual image with geospatial qualities attached. This allows measurements to be easily taken between different points of reference accurately.

Coastway were recently involved in the laser scan of an ancient passage tomb which fell within the boundaries of a major road project. The survey was successful in recording the stone walls as 3 dimensional models. The passage grave was carefully moved under licence outside the limits of the construction site and as an added benefit the 3 dimensional model provided a complete record from which the feature could be replaced exactly as found several metres outside the work zone.

We have recently been involved in the investigation of ancient Viking artwork in Norway. Scanning of rock surfaces revealed ancient rock carvings, an example can be seen below.
